THE DOOR WAS CLOSED to Nicholas’s office, but he was not working; he was looking out the window, his thoughts consumed with Scilla. Walking arm in arm with her had been wonderful, so much like old times, and yet with an added dimension after their night at the ball. Everything about her stirred his senses, from her shy smile to the scent of her hair to the curve of her neck. The night of the first ball he had been so angry at the thought of her with other men; knowing she hadn’t been with anyone had overwhelmed him. Her reaction to his statement about returning to Mississippi after his business was done, however, had not escaped his notice, though she had tried to quickly hide it. Could it be that she did not want him to leave, that her feelings for him might be as strong as his? Sighing, he rose and went to the window. It had never been in his plans to stay in New Orleans, at least not now. He was not in a position to do so. Seeing Scilla again had changed so much; perhaps she would consider returning to Mississippi with him. His head swam at the thought of having her with him every day and night, in his home and his bed. They had only begun to reacquaint, but Nicholas knew he did not want her to disappear from his life again. Tonight he would call on her again and tell her what he felt. For the first time since he had seen Scilla, his head was finally clear enough that he could concentrate fully on his work. He sat down and immersed himself in numbers, having settled in his mind and heart what he had always known he wanted.
